Nearly 200 State of North Dakota email accounts are believed to have been registered on AshleyMadison.com, a well-known cheating site.

In August, hackers released customer information from AshleyMadison.com. The site gives members the opportunity to have an affair. 9.7 gigabytes of data was released with the hack which included account details of 32 million users.

In a recent analysis, nearly 200 State of North Dakota email accounts were registered. No specific names or email addresses are being released. The 200 State of North Dakota email accounts registered include:

  • 49 K - 12 public school email accounts.
  • 129 North Dakota University System accounts.
  • 3 State of North Dakota accounts.
  • 1 Municipal Government account.

This list is not comprehensive as a large number of domain names and email systems are used by government entities in the state. Rob Port, an editor of sayanthingblog.com, searched domain names and email systems including nd.gov, nd.us, and nodak.edu.

AshleyMadison.com is known for creating fake accounts so it could be argued that not all of these email accounts are real. However, it seems unlikely that someone would use a North Dakota government email as a fake account.
