Bismarck jumped into the top ten on the list of the '2018's Safest Cities in America', while another North Dakota city also was in the top 20.

WalletHub did their annual study as to which cities in the country are the safest and out of 182 cities, Bismarck ranked as the 8th safest city in America. This was an improvement from a year ago when Bismarck finished 21st. Fargo was the other city from the Peace Garden State to crack the top 20. They finished 18th overall but also dropped from last year's ranking at 6th.

The rankings were based on 39 different metrics which included community safety, the number of traffic fatalities, the number of police officers, and the potential for natural disasters.

Cities finishing ahead of Bismarck in the rankings from 1 to 7 are as follows:

  1. Columbia, MD
  2. South Burlington, VT
  3. Plano, TX
  4. Virginia Beach, VA
  5. Warwick, RI
  6. Gilbert, AZ
  7. Yonkers, NY

The cities at the bottom of the list included San Bernardino, CA, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and St. Louis, MO.
