A son writes: "I'm writing this on behalf of my mom. My mom is on a limited income due to being disabled from a failed back surgery. She is also a diabetic with fibromyalgia. Plus she takes care of my 16-year-old brother. My mom loves every holiday. For St. Patrick's Day we went out for a nice dinner and lots of laughs. This was the last holiday mom got to enjoy.

In April, I took her to the ER. They did tests and found she was having gall bladder attacks. She was sent home the next day, but days later my mom was transported back to the ER.  Mom spent Easter in the hospital. She was in the hospital for three weeks this time and had 3 more surgeries. One surgery was to place two stints; one in her pancreas and the other in the bile duct where the gall bladder had been. Mom started to feel better, but only for a couple days. Then they did an endoscopy. This showed the leak had caused an abscess. Doctors had to place her on several antibiotics to prevent further infections.

May started off to be a great month. Mom was getting better and she was laughing and enjoying life again. We talked about the approaching summer and how nice and relaxing it was going to be to go fishing. In July mom got some bad news. Her father who had been battling leukemia, was not doing well. She and my brother left the next day. She did not make it in time before he passed. The loss of her dad was too much and she started to get worn down. They made it home but she was not feeling well. She went back to the doctor and found out the antibiotics killed off all of the good bacteria in her colon, causing a syndrome called “C. Diff".

Mom has been on several different medications and has been in and out of the hospital for several months. Her last hospital stay, two weeks ago, resulted in a medication to help with negative symptoms of the C diff. Mom continues her treatment and is hopeful that 2013 will be a better year.

There are days that she can't get out of bed due to the pain but she tries. She is a fighter and a wonderful mom. I wish I could do more for her. I'm nominating her and my brother for the Christmas With Us program that you are sponsoring.
