Colin Trevorrow Is No Longer Directing ‘Star Wars: Episode 9’
In news that seemed somewhat inevitable from Day One, Colin Trevorrow has exited Star Wars: Episode IX. Trevorrow’s departure comes after a bumpy year for the director, whose latest film, The Book of Henry, was met with largely negative reviews (to say the least). It also comes just a few months after Lucasfilm parted ways with directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller, replacing them with Ron Howard, who is currently completing production on the untitled Han Solo spinoff.
For many cinephiles, Trevorrow has become a symbol of white male privilege falling upwards in Hollywood; despite its massive box office success, Jurassic World was an underwhelming blockbuster that failed to impress critics, and The Book of Henry was pretty much dead on arrival — almost instantly notorious for being bad. For those who weren’t happy with Trevorrow directing a Star Wars sequel, The Wrap’s report on his exit will come as good news.
Disney released an official statement on Trevorrow’s departure from Episode IX, and it’s about as formal and amicable-sounding as you might expect:
Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX.’ Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.
There have been rumors in recent months that Lucasfilm was unhappy with the director’s approach and that Trevorrow might be stepping down soon. And honestly, this is just about the most unsurprising development in the Star Wars universe. Trevorrow was hired to direct Episode IX back in 2015, and since then there’s been an invisible countdown to his exit — one undoubtedly accelerated by The Book of Henry.
Not to throw a party at someone’s funeral (and I’m sure Trevorrow is a nice human being), but the man’s work hasn’t exactly made too many people excited about his involvement in Star Wars.
Episode IX is set to hit theaters in 2019. Lucasfilm is expected to find another director shortly. Until then, we’re sure to hear a whole lot more about Trevorrow’s departure.
