Dave Grohl Designed Guitars Throne While ‘High As a Kite’
While some Americans spent July 4th celebrating with copious amounts of fireworks and booze, the truly lucky ones spent it celebrating Dave Grohl's triumphant return to the stage. And considering he performed the entire show while perched atop a giant throne of guitars that was designed while he was high on painkillers, "triumphant" seems something of an understatement.
The Foo Fighters performed a special 20th anniversary concert at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Grohl's sort-of hometown of Washington, DC, on Saturday (July 4). It was the band's first show since they were forced to cancel the rest of their UK stadium tour, including a headlining gig at Glastonbury Festival, after a nasty fall left Grohl with a broken leg.
Grohl explained the throne's conception in detail to the crowd in true yarn-spinner fashion, saying, "Let me tell you a story. A funny thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. We were on tour and we were in Europe, playing a gig in Sweden. It was a beautiful night just like tonight, a big-ass stadium full of people. We started playing our set, it was all good. Then guess what? I fell off the f---king stage."
He then rolled a clip showing the fall and continued, "What can I say? I ate sh--. I hit the ground so hard, I dislocated my ankle and I broke my leg. But I met a nice doctor and he said, 'Look, you dislocated your ankle. I gotta put it back in place right now.' And then he put it back in place. And I said 'Can I go finish the f--king show now?' He said 'No, wait, we got to put a brace on you'…I said 'When you get the brace, you come back and tell me and we'll put it on.'…We had a great show, and then I went and got a f--ing X-ray, and I got jacked up. I went to the hospital and had a bit of surgery…and then I thought, 'Oh my god, we have to cancel shows. I don't like canceling shows'… So I took a couple oxycodones, don't touch that sh--, and I drew a picture…I was high as a f--king kite when I drew that version! I said, 'I'm not missing this show for the world, you build me that throne and we'll play Washington, DC.'"
You can check out Grohl's initial design of the throne -- which includes text that says 'Lazers and sh-- shooting from the top' -- below.
There's still no word as to how long Grohl will have to remain seated at shows, but if the Foo Fighters' tour t-shirts are any indication, it might be a while.
