Lonnie Laffen, a Republican state senator, has proposed a bill that would increase the speed limit on North Dakota state highways from 75 to 80 mph.

It was 13 years ago that the speed limit in North Dakota was raised from 70 to 75 mph. Now, Laffen says efficiency would benefit motorists and vehicles are safe enough to handle it at this point in time.

The bill would affect interstates 94 and 29. Reduction of speeds could be enforced within the borders of cities the interstates run through.

On January 3, the state legislature of North Dakota will meet to discuss the issue.

It was just last year, that both South Dakota and Montana increased their interstate speed limits to 80 mph.
