The money spent on smoking every year definitely adds up no matter where you live.

The health risks associated with smoking are one thing, but the monetary expenditures throughout a lifetime of tobacco use is a whole other animal.

Recently, WalletHub researched just how much it would cost in each state for a smoker throughout their lifetime. When you take into consideration such annual costs as cigarette packs per day, health care expenditures, income losses and other costs brought on by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, the amount a North Dakotan smoker will spend in their lifetime comes out to $1,191,219.

The most alarming thing about the fact that the staggering amount is nearly $1.2 million is that it's the 5th lowest cost per smoker throughout their lifetime for any state in the country. Per year, the average North Dakota smoker spends $23,357 on tobacco use.

If you think those numbers are inflated, here's exactly how WalletHub came up with those results:

For our calculations, we assumed an adult who smokes one pack of cigarettes per day beginning at age 18, when a person can legally purchase tobacco products in the U.S. We also assumed a lifespan of 51 more years, taking into account that 69 is the average age at which a smoker dies.

In all statistics mention to determine these numbers, here is how North Dakota faired:

  • Out-of-Pocket Cost per Smoker – $84,140 (Rank: 1st)
  • Financial-Opportunity Cost per Smoker – $706,812 (Rank: 1st)
  • Health-Care Cost per Smoker – $147,718 (Rank: 14th)
  • Income Loss per Smoker – $241,185 (Rank: 33rd)
  • Other Costs per Smoker – $11,364 (Rank: 23rd)
