Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez skipped the 2018 Golden Globe Awards to take a relief trip to Puerto Rico.

The 48-year-old singer/actress and 42-year-old retired MLB star traveled to the country Sunday to follow up on their fundraising efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

"I could have been [at the Golden Globes], but I wanted to be here," Lopez told Good Morning America, who followed the couple on their trip. "I chose to be here."

The "Amor, Amor, Amor" singer wore black during her visit as a sign of solidarity with the Time's Up equality and anti-harassment movement and its followers. She called for equality for Puerto Ricans in the GMA segment.

"We just want to be treated equally. We're Americans," the star, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, said. "We're here to kind of shine a light and let everybody know, like [Alex] said, 'We're in our first inning. We have a long way to go.'"

Lopez and Rodriguez helped raise $35 million for hurricane relief efforts in October. The couple announced $2 million in aid for federally-qualified community health centers, and will help allocate the remaining funds.

"We had high hopes that, you know, it was going to be further along than it is," Lopez said of rebuilding efforts. "But there's still a lot of work to be done."

"It was important for us to follow up and come down here and see with our own eyes," Rodriguez added.

Lopez shared a photo with Rodriguez from their trip on Instagram, calling their visit "an amazing enlightening heartbreaking and yet hopeful day."

"We made it down to Puerto Rico for the first time since the hurrican and our Somos concerts. Still many miles to go....but grateful to go the distance side by side with this amazing buy.... #hesmybestie #hesmyman #hesmysuperhero," she wrote.
