Lamoureux Twins Lead USA Women’s Hockey to Gold Medal Win

In one of the most electrifying hockey games you'll watch at any level, the USA Women's Hockey Team defeated Canada in an overtime shootout to win the gold medal.

Jocelyne Lamoureux saved her best move for the game-winning goal in the overtime shootout that brought USA Women's Hockey their first gold medal in 20 years.

As you saw in the above video, 20-year old goalie Maddie Rooney stopped the ensuing shot from Canada and the celebration was on. Rooney had 29 saves overall.

Jocelyne Lamoureux's goal came in the sudden death portion of the shootout after five shootout rounds had USA and Canada tied at 2-2. Prior to the shootout, the two teams were tied 2-2 through 80 minutes of play being the three periods in regulation and a scoreless 20-minute overtime period.

Canada had a 2-1 lead in regulation entering the third period. It seemed as if Canada was content on sitting on the lead as Team USA threatened several times early on the frame. That lead held until with just under seven minutes remaining, Monique Lamoureux (Jocelyne's twin sister) took a long cross-ice pass into a breakaway before beating Canada goalie Shannon Szabados glove side to tie the score at 2-2.

In the initial sudden death overtime 20-minute period of 4-on-4 action, Team USA continued to threaten throughout with nine shots, but no goals to show for it. They had 41 shots through the 80-minutes of ice time, 39 were stopped by Szabados. Team USA was also able to fend off a Canada power play over the last 1:35 of the overtime frame.

The shootout would follow with Rooney stopping the first Canada attempt before Gigi Marvin put USA up 1-0. But Meghan Agosta would tie it on Canada's second attempt. The goalies would trade stops in the third round, before Canada would grab a 2-1 shootout lead when Melodie Daust beat Rooney in round four. Amanda Kessel answered for Team USA in her shootout chance to tie it up. Szabados and Rooney once again traded stops in round five before Jocelyn Lamoureux's impressive game-winner.

Team USA struck first in the opening period with less than a minute left when Hilary Knight scored on a deflection to take a 1-0 lead. But Canada would tie it just two minutes into the second period when Haley Irwin knocked a pass out of mid-air past Rooney. Just five minutes later, Canada would grab a 2-1 from the scoring legend Marie-Philip Poulin wrist shot.

The only two North Dakotans in the 2018 Winter Olympics, Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux played key roles with the game-winning and game-tying goals, respectively. The two will be coming back home with gold medals.
