Actor Mickey Rooney, a Hollywood legend, died on Sunday, April 6 at the age of 93, leading to some heartfelt Twitter reactions from a younger generation of celebs.

The actor, who appeared in tons of classic films, working steadily from the 1930s through the 1950s, was emblematic of a time and a place. He was a solid box office bet during his heyday and he was married to an array of Hollywood beauties, most famously the late Ava Gardner.

The cause of Rooney's death has not yet been released as of press time. He leaves behind quite a film legacy.

As we said previously, Rooney, whose most famous roles include 'Boys Town,' 'National Velvet,' 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and 'Black Stallion,' was from a different era and from the Golden Age of Hollywood, having made multiple films with the late singer and actress Judy Garland.

A crop of current stars took some time to pay their respects to the actor on Twitter, with big-voiced singer Ariana Grande proving herself to have been quite a fan of the star.

See who said what below. And leave it Lena Dunham to inject a little humor into her tweet, in a very Lena-esque (and warmly appropriate) way.

PopCrush sends good thoughts to Rooney's family, friends and fans.
