National Weather Service Issues a River Flood Watch for Morton and Burleigh Counties
The National Weather Service has issued a RIVER FLOOD WATCH for Morton and Burleigh Counties as the winter melt continues.
According to the bulletin:
HEART RIVER NEAR MANDAN AFFECTING BURLEIGH AND MORTON COUNTIES FOR THE HEART RIVER BASIN INCLUDING MANDAN NO FLOODING IS OBSERVED OR FORECAST.
STRONG RUNOFF AND WATER HIGH ENOUGH TO MOBILIZE THE ICE SHEET ON THE HEART RIVER HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN WESTERN MORTON COUNTY. THE HEART RIVER NEAR MANDAN WILL CONTINUE TO RISE FOR THE NEXT 24-48 HOURS. AS IT RISES AND ICE FROM UPSTREAM MAKES ITS WAY INTO THE AREA...THE RISK OF ICE JAMS NEAR MANDAN WILL INCREASE. OTHER SIMILAR RIVERS IN THE REGION HAVE RECENTLY EXPERIENCED ICE JAMS ALONG WITH RAPID RISES IN WATER LEVELS AND MINOR FLOODING UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS.
