In case you haven't noticed, and you probably have, but people who live in North Dakota are generally pretty happy.

According to a new study from WalletHub, North Dakota ranks as the 3rd happiest state in America. When you read that, it's easy to question exactly how that statistic is measured.

It turns out the determining factors were based on three key dimensions: 1) Emotional & Physical Well-Being, 2) Work Environment and 3) Community & Environment. These key dimensions were then evaluated using 28 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing maximum happiness.

The following rankings are where North Dakota landed in the corresponding categories:

  • 14th – Depression Rate
  • 18th – Adequate-Sleep Rate
  • 1st – Long-Term Unemployment Rate
  • 11th – Volunteerism Rate
  • 2nd – Divorce Rate
  • 20th – Safety Ranking
  • 1st – Income Growth Rate

Utah and Minnesota were the only two states to finish ahead of North Dakota in the ranking. It looks like if you're looking to move somewhere to be happy, North Dakota's one of the best places to be.
