North Dakota Legislature Passes New Voter ID Regulations

Today, the North Dakota Legislature approved new legislation that clarifies the acceptable forms of identification someone can use when voting in ND.Under the new regulations, the only acceptable forms of ID are a ND Drivers Licences or nondriver's ID card, an official tribal ID card, a long-term care certificate prescribed by the secretary of state, or a current military ID card or passport. Changes to the current law include the inability of using student ID cards issued by Universities. You also can't use bank statements or change of address forms to prove residency.

Opponents to the new legislation are concerned over it's impact for student populations. The biggest population of voters that reported issues with voting in the last election was students. Most legislators agree there needs to be better communication to student populations on the requirements for voting prior to elections.

The legislation is still pending the governors signature before becoming law.
