North Dakota Votes on Medical Marijuana Next Month

Election time will decide whether North Dakota voters want to legalize medical marijuana.

Next month, Measure 5 will be on the ballot. The measure would allows patients who qualify to possess up to 3 ounces of medical marijuana to treat their condition. Such conditions are cancer, AIDS, hepatitis C, ALS, glaucoma, and epilepsy, among others. Patients eligible for treatment will be issued ID cards by the state Health Department.

Citizens against the measure question the appropriate dosages for medical marijuana and whether the substance can be controlled from a medical standpoint. On the flip side, proponents of the measure say medical marijuana helps to relieve chronic pain and reduces side-effects of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

Currently, there are 25 states with comprehensive medical marijuana programs. We'll find out come election time if North Dakota is added to that list.
