The Bismarck Police Department has issued a press release to remind everyone in Bismarck that the posting of signs on public property is prohibited.

Several events use signs to publicize what's happening whether it's an open house, yard sale, or just a flyer promoting the event. However, the Bismarck PD is making it clear that these are violations of Bismarck ordinance.

No advertising for such events is allowed to be placed upon any public building, bridge, fence, railing, sidewalk or any other public property. This means that if you're having a yard sale, you can put the sign in your own yard, but not on the boulevard, boulevard trees, stop signs, light poles, fire hydrants, traffic signals or any other public property.

Flyers that promote any event placed under windshields of parked cars are also prohibited.

Any violation of these ordinances is punishable by a fine up to $1,500 and/or 30 days in jail, as they will be classified as a class B misdemeanor.

The press release gives encouragement for advertising events, just so long as it's done legally.
