The Simpsons has gone on long enough that fans will inevitably face cast departure or a potential end to the series, but despite the recent renewal for Seasons 27 and 28, that end may already be in sight. Iconic Simpsons mainstay Harry Shearer appears to have revealed his exit from the long-running FOX animated series, and not even Ned Flanders could find the optimism here.

Now that Upfronts 2015 have entered the scheduling phase, we thought most of the major renewals, cancellations and pickups had delivered their biggest surprises. Not so apparently, as FOX has decided to put American Idol out to pasture after 15 seasons, ending the reality singing competition for good next year.

Well, that didn’t take long! Just days after rumors broke that FOX was ready to greenlight an official X-Files revival with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, the truth is officially out there. Mulder and Scully will return for a limited X-Files run on FOX, but what other details can we uncover?

'The Simpsons' has been on for so long that no corner of this fictional city hasn't been explored, and no casual reference hasn't been transformed into a full-fledged character or storyline. While some renewals are more surprising than others, FOX has officially granted a second season to Andy Samberg's Golden Globe-winning 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' along with thirds for Kevin Bacon serial killer drama 'The Following' and Mindy Kaling's critically-adored 'The Mindy Project,' and a fourth season for Zooey Deschanel's ever-quirky 'New Girl.'
