USN evaluated several factors including both the violent crime rate and the property crime rate in each state, as measured by the FBI in 2015. When reviewing the rankings, you will notice the states with a larger population, in comparison to North Dakota ranked higher in crime. It's a simple equation, the larger the population, the better chance of crime.

The safest states in the country are

  • Vermont (#1)
  • Maine
  • New Hampshire
  • Idaho
  • New Jersey

The most dangerous states are

  • New Mexico (#50)
  • Alaska
  • Louisiana
  • Nevada
  • Tennessee

North Dakota ranked at #12 due in large part to the oil boom and boom in population. In 2016, the states population was over 758,000 people in comparison in 2010 at about 674,000.
