The Philadelphia Eagles seemed in control throughout the afternoon against the Carolina Panthers but a rough fourth quarter did them in.

The Panthers scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win 21-17 after the Eagles entered the final period with a 17-0 lead.

It seemed as if the Eagles were in control. Carson Wentz threw for 310 yards on 30 of 37 when it seemed like the ball was rarely hitting the turf. One might think that would equate to an Eagles victory.

But Carolina had other ideas. Curtis Samuel started off Carolina’s rally on a reverse off right end to make it 17-6 after Graham Gano’s extra point was no good. After an Eagles punt, the Panthers struck again on an 18-yard pass from Cam Newton to Devin Funchess. The two-point conversion cut the lead to 17-14 with 4:08 left.

Again, the Eagles were unable to covert a first down as they would punt away to the Panthers with 2:28 left.

The Eagles defense came close to stopping the Panthers in four downs until Newton hit former Eagle Torrey Smith on the run for a first down on a 4th and 10 when Newton was on the run. That 35-yard play put the Panthers at the Eagles 34. Five plays later, Carolina scored on a 1-yard pass from Newton to Greg Olsen to make it 21-17 with 1:26 remaining.

The Eagles has time and we’re setup in Panthers territory when Wentz went deep to Alshon Jeffery and a long pass interference was called on the incompletion at the Carolina 22. But on 4th and 2, Wentz was sacked by Julius Peppers who forced a fumble on the play, essentially ending the Eagles hopes.

Wentz threw touchdowns to Jeffery and Dallas Goedert on the afternoon, but it wasn’t enough. Zach Ertz had 9 catches for 138 yards on the afternoon as well.

The Eagles fall to 3-4 and will play in London against Jacksonville (3-4) next Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CST.
