Will the Los Angeles Rams Make Carson Wentz the First Overall Pick?
Thursday morning (4/14), it was announced that the Tennessee Titans had traded the first overall pick in this year's NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Rams. It's obvious that the Rams will take a quarterback, but will that quarterback be Carson Wentz?
In the minds of most NFL analysts, there are two quarterbacks sitting atop the list of NFL Draft prospects: North Dakota State's Wentz and Cal's Jared Goff. There's no doubt that both will go early in the NFL Draft, but which one will the Rams select?
Wentz has been considered the top quarterback prospect in this year's NFL Draft for quite some time, though there are questions regarding the competition he faced in college. The other prospects, like Goff, for example, faced FBS competition, while Wentz mainly faced FCS competition. Many seem to think that Wentz should have no trouble transitioning to the NFL, but there will still be some questions.
If there's one coach, though, with the experience to help Wentz's transition from the FCS to the NFL, it's Rams coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher was the coach of the Houston Oilers when they selected Steve McNair, from Division I-AA Alcorn State, with the third overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft. McNair was a three-time Pro Bowler and won the AP NFL MVP in 2003. Not a bad career for a player from Division I-AA, right?
There are definite similarities between Wentz's game and 'Air' McNair's and there are some NFL analysts that think that that's exactly what the Rams are looking for. What they're also looking for, though, is a face for the franchise.
While Wentz could definitely be the face of any NFL franchise, Cal's Jared Goff may be the perfect face for the Los Angeles Rams. The team is, obviously, new to the city and needs to rebuild the fanbase they left so many years ago. What better way to build a fanbase than with a #1-overall draft pick who was born and played his college ball in the state of California? A team source has even confirmed that the team is currently leaning towards drafting Goff, according to ESPN.
Other sources, however, have stated that the Rams are actually leaning towards drafting Wentz.
No matter what, the Los Angeles Rams are going to take one of the two quarterbacks with the top overall pick, but which one will it be? It sounds like we'll have to wait until April 28th.
