Catch Hot Air Balloons Soar Over the Badlands This Weekend in Medora North Dakota
This has been on my bucket list, and I may just head out after work for it. If you’re looking for a unique weekend adventure in North Dakota, Medora is the place to be! One of the town’s most popular traditions returns as colorful hot air balloons take flight over the breathtaking Badlands.

Plan Ahead for Morning Balloon Launches in Medora
The fun begins early Saturday and Sunday morning at the Medora Campground entrance (3370 Pool Dr, Medora, ND), where balloon pilots will set up and fire up their balloons before lifting into the skies. While rides aren’t available to the public, you’ll still get unforgettable views and incredible photo opportunities—all free from the ground.

Parking near the launch site is reserved for pilots and crew, so plan ahead. Limited parking will be available at Chimney Park, or you can park at the Medora Musical Welcome Center (3422 Chateau Rd) and catch a shuttle for just $5 (cash only). Kids 12 and under ride free. To make the morning even sweeter, breakfast sandwiches and coffee will be available for purchase at the launch site.
Since weather plays a big role in balloon flights, launches may be delayed or canceled if conditions aren’t safe. Updates will be posted on the official Medora Hot Air Balloon Rally Facebook event page, Medora’s digital channels, and shared at the launch site. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this happens, and will hopefully see you there!
