As a response to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, a new Republican-sponsored bill has been introduced that would make for stiffer penalties on those involved in riots.

The bill specifically calls for increased penalties, making what would be a misdemeanor into a felony, should anyone be charged with participating in a riot of fewer than 100 people.

Rep. Todd Porter, one of the main sponsors of the bill, says that after what took place with DAPL protests, the lesser charge would not suffice.

More than 625 arrests have been made with regards to the Dakota Access Pipeline since last August.
