Bismarck Bobcats Layne Sedevie #400 WINS -“As Good As It Gets”
"As good as it gets" was part of what Layne Sedevie told me on the phone this afternoon
I learned a ton about this 39-year-old Bismarck native. At just 2 years old wearing a pair of skates became second nature, and of course, his career on the ice was pretty much written in stone - from Bismarck High to Bemidji State Layne played the sport he loved -hockey. This is where most players who end their career after college resort to just watching it on television or at the rink, Sedevie with a degree in Criminal Justice was looking for a job when he was done with school, and our good luck shined when he took a coaching job with the Bismarck Bobcats.
"13 years - through the good ones and the bad..."
What a rookie first season as head coach with the Cats in 2010, leading them to a 3-0 win over the Fairbanks Ice Dogs - taking home the Robertson Cup. Keep in mind how many games are in a Bismarck Bobcats season, and how consistent you need to be to rack up 400 wins - it's impressive beyond belief. Layne loves his job and it shows, he takes tremendous pride in being a part of one of the historic franchises in junior hockey. One of the things he expressed to me is all the young men he has coached in the present to current day - past players staying in touch with him, sending him updates on their lives through text messages - that's the reward of being a first-class coach and human being.
"A magical run that will probably never happen again...
...winning those two games IN hostile territory ( Minot ) last year, at the end of the season, was beyond thrilling. Last Saturday night here at home, the final 10 seconds counted down with the Bobcats securing a 10-4 victory over the Aberdeen Wings - Layne looked at his 5-year-old daughter Lettie pointing at the "400 Wins" sign - the message was quite clear to ALL of us - "As Good As It Gets!" Congratulations Coach!
