After months of will-they-won’t-they, directors signing on only to sign off again, and script uncertainty, Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie has finally locked down a director and an official release date. It looks like Gore Verbinski, who was announced a week ago, is here to stay, as the movie will finally hit theaters February 14, 2019. You’ve got plenty of time to find a Valentine’s date!

The day had previously been locked by Fox and Marvel for an unspecified release, and Fox announced yesterday that it would indeed be Gambit’s solo debut. We have no idea what the movie will be about (besides the Cajun mutant), or what storyline it’ll focus on (though maybe Fox will lean into the romantic time of year). We do know that the script, according to Tatum, has been undergoing “a bit of a rethink,” since, after Deadpool and Logan, superhero movies can be a lot edgier and potentially R-rated without sacrificing anything at the box office.

This movie has been in development since at least 2007, when it was a semi-planned spinoff from X-Men Origins: Wolverine featuring Taylor Kitsch in the title role. As time went by, Kitsch moved on and Tatum joined up, remaining surprisingly faithful to the project for years as it courted directors who came and went. It originally had an October 2016 release date, which obviously didn’t happen unless we all missed something really crucial, so hopefully this one sticks, and Verbinski doesn’t fly the coop after someone offers to finance a Rango sequel.
