Spooky season is here, and North Dakotans love a good haunted tale. We watch scary movies, we read spooky novels, but most of all, we love hearing stories about our state's haunted history. Did you know there are several spots in North Dakota that are said to be extremely haunted?
In this series, we will delve into each of North Dakota's most haunted locations and examine why they have earned their haunted reputations.
Today, we start with a place in Fargo, North Dakota, called "The Children's Museum.
The Children's Museum at Yunker Farm
In Fargo, there's an eerie little place called "The Children's Museum". Honestly, a children's museum just sounds creepy out of the gate. What are we looking at? --Old children's toys that are probably haunted? Creepy porcelain dolls? Mummified children? My mind doesn't immediately go to great places with this one.
According to ZuzuforKids.com, up until recently, the space was used as an entertainment venue for children. There was a planetarium, puppet theater, and several other fun things for kids inside.
Like many businesses in North Dakota, COVID caused a financial strain on the facility, and it is now permanently closed.
Haunted History
So, why do so many people in North Dakota feel this place is haunted?
The Children's Museum is actually a 1876 farmhouse located at Yunker Farm. It was initially built for the Whitman family, which had eight children, but later came into the possession of the Yunkers. According to OnlyinYourState.com, the Yunkers loved children. Of the many children who lived there with the families over the years, there were rumors of some of these children having tragic accidents.
On the property, there is a well. It is said that one child fell into the well and drowned. According to the source, many people who stood by the well felt short of breath. Others have reported seeing a small child-like figure standing by the well.
According to North Dakota Haunted Houses, there have been sightings of Elizabeth Yunker in the upstairs rooms. There have also been claims of the windows and doors opening on their own.
The source also said some have reported very spooky incidents with the elevator, where the button sometimes gets pushed by "unseen hands" causing it to go up and down on its own.
