The third time’s the charm for How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Father, but it might also be the Worst. A third attempt at resuscitating the romantic comedy franchise now has a familiar writer from FXX’s You’re The Worst, and perhaps a revamped premise.

Per Deadline, writer Alison Bennett will take the third stab at a female-led version of How I Met Your Mother, using her own experience rather than the pitch developed by This Is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Worth noting – the title is said to once again be How I Met Your Father, despite original creator-producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas using How I Met Your Dad the first time around.

FOX boss Dana Walden previously mentioned the studio would try again, after its most recent attempt with Aptaker and Berger was shelved by their promotion to showrunners. Prior to that, Walden also expressed interest in reviving the original series outright, though Josh Radnor’s Rise was taken to series at NBC, while Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders have Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events and Friends From College.

Anyone familiar with You’re The Worst might agree that an edgier take could suit How I Met Your Father, rather than recycle the old tone, but will the third attempt land?
