The North Dakota Department of Transportation and the South Dakota Department of Transportation are launching a bracket-style competition that pits snowplow names from both states against each other in a public vote.

The contest, called “Battle of the Blades,” begins March 21 and features head-to-head matchups between snowplow names in a tournament format similar to college basketball brackets. Participants can download and complete a bracket predicting winners and cast votes online during each round.

Voting will take place on select days aligned with the NCAA men’s basketball tournament schedule. Separate voting is available for each state’s bracket, with winners advancing through multiple rounds.

The competition opens with the “Thaw-tful 32” round March 21-22, followed by the “Snowy Sixteen” on March 26-27, the “Abominable Eight” on March 28-29, and the “Frosty Four” from April 2-4. The championship round is scheduled for April 5-6.

Winners from each state will advance to a final matchup to determine the overall champion. Results are scheduled to be announced April 8.

The event invites residents to engage with winter maintenance efforts while adding a competitive and interactive element to snowplow naming across the region.
