Who Makes The Best Scotcheroos? The Quintessential ND Treat!
Scotcheroos are uniquely North Dakota.
My mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother have all been making scotcheroos in my family for generations. I just LOVE the aroma of this delicious treat.
What exactly are scotcheroos for those who don't know?
They are definitely a Midwest thing, as you will be hard-pressed to find them for sale in other parts of the country. Very popular in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and of course, North Dakota and South Dakota.
My mother told me the original recipe was found on a Rice Krispies package. The first recipe I could find for scotcheroos was all the way back in the mid-1960s, according to the Midwesterner.

It was actually a nationwide marketing campaign for Rice Krispies, but it gained regional traction here in the Midwest and is still very much a thing today.
The recipe is very simple and varies from household to household and place to place that sells them, but most include the following:
Corn syrup, sugar, vanilla extract, creamy peanut butter, Rice Krispies, chocolate chips, and most importantly, BUTTERSCOTCH chips. Some people leave out the butterscotch chips, and that is a BIG mistake in my opinion. It's what truly makes them SCOTCHeroos.
The Midwesterner has a great recipe you can steal here.
Where can you find scotcheroos in North Dakota?
You can find scotcheroos for sale at select convenience and gas stations, bake sales, farmers' markets, bakeries, coffee shops, and even some retail stores (like Scheels).
Not to mention, any place where people gather, from weddings, graduations, funerals, and everywhere in between.
