Getting a Haircut in Bismarck Just Got a Little Harder

I don't know about you, but it's not easy to find a place to cut your hair in Bismarck-Mandan, and it hasn't been for years. It seems like every hair salon has a 120-minute wait, and it's very difficult to get in. You really have to be on your toes if you want a cut these days, and be prepared to be lined up outside the doors when the salon opens if you want to get in.

Key Reasons Why It's More Difficult to Get a Haircut

One reason is that hair salons across the United States are closing up shop. With more closures, you have fewer options. The reason for this is the same reason so many other types of businesses are struggling: rising inflation and increased operating costs (salons are facing higher rent, utility bills, and supply costs), according to NBC News.

Another thing that is hurting salons, according to the lady who cuts my hair, is that clients are stretching the time between appointments to save money, thus lowering revenue for businesses. I know that is true for myself; nothing is cheap anymore, including getting a haircut. I used to get my hair cut monthly, now I would say it's more like every other month.

Business Model Changes

My hairdresser also told me it's tougher to get a haircut because there are fewer people cutting hair these days, at least in traditional salons. Many stylists are leaving traditional brick-and-mortar salons for independent salon suites, leaving traditional salons with fewer stylists, thus increasing wait time. Also, the industry is still recovering from the pandemic-related closures and debt.

As you can see, it's a mess. A combination of numerous issues is making the once-simple chore of getting a haircut a not-so-easy task. All of these problems are causing struggling financial salons to close their doors or downsize. And, it appears that is going on with a salon in Bismarck.

Great Clips at 914 South 12th Street had this sign up on its doors.

I called over to the other Great Clips location up north on Pinehurst (just off Century), and the lady told me the south end will remain closed until March, and then they will reevaluate the situation.

Yep, getting a haircut in the Capital Region just keeps getting harder and harder.
