Rare “Blue” Supermoon Set To Illuminate The North Dakota Sky 🌕
If it seems like nobody has been talking about "supermoons" so far in 2024, you are right.
First off, what is a supermoon? According to Wikipedia, a supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with the perigee, the closest the moon comes to Earth in its elliptic orbit. That's it in a nutshell.
Because of this state, a supermoon will appear about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a typical full moon. A full moon on steroids, if you will.
The reason why nobody has been talking about supermoons so far in 2024 is because we haven't had one yet.
The first "supermoon" of 2024 is coming up one week from today on Monday, August 19th.
This supermoon is known as the "Blue" supermoon. The Blue Supermoon will be about 50,000 miles closer to the Earth than at its furthest point, according to FunCheapSF.
The best time to observe the Blue Supermoon is when the moon is near the horizon during either the moonrise or moonset.
The Blue Supermoon is also known as the "Sturgeon" Moon.
We also have three more supermoons coming our way for the rest of the year. They include:
Tuesday, September 17th will be the "Harvest" Supermoon and will also feature a partial lunar eclipse.
Thursday, October 17th will feature the biggest supermoon of the year for 2024.
Friday, November 15th will be the last supermoon of 2024.
That's right, four straight supermoons each month are set to brighten up the North Dakota sky.
I know my eyes will be on the sky. Something to look forward to each month.
