Katy Perry Accused of Blackface Shoe Design
Uh-oh. Katy Perry's new shoe line has been accused of blackface.
The "Roar" singer has come under fire after people noticed that her show—the "Rue FaceSlip on Loafers" and its high-heeled version, "Ora Face Block Heel Sandal"—resemble blackface. The scrutiny is so bad TMZ reports the collection is being pulled from store shelves.
The shoes are currently available to purchase on Walmart's website:
As you can see from the photos, the shoes are black and have two eyes, a nose, and big red lips on them. TMZ's sources say Perry's design was not meant to be offensive, however, they've acknowledged the public's concerns. "In order to be respectful and sensitive the team is in the process of pulling the shoes," the insider revealed.
Earlier this month, Gucci was also accused of blackface after releasing a black turtleneck sweater that pulls up over your mouth and features a cut-out and red lips. It was a strange addition to their collection, which is why fans were understandably outraged. The brand has since apologized and discontinued the sweater.
