While it’s been a few years since we last saw Lindsay Lohan in a feature film, that doesn’t mean the former Disney wunderkind hasn’t been busy. Not only has Lohan popped in for a handful of guest appearances on shows like Two Broke Girls and Eastbound & Down, she’s also been hard at work on her big screen comeback, The Shadow Within, a supernatural thriller about a private investigator who is looking into the death of her werewolf father. It may not compare to her previous heights as a child actress, but it’s a living. Not everybody gets to be a movie star.

Lohan isn’t stopping there, however. In a move typical of the era of social media casting  —  where every actor with an eye on a part encourages their fans to start a grassroots campaign on their behalf  — Lohan turned to her Instagram account (via The Wrap) to publicly throw her name into the ring for Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid film, even promising to sing in the role:

Now, you and I both know there’s probably no chance that Lohan is picked for the role of Ariel. I don’t want to make light of the addictions that the actress has struggled through and (seemingly) recovered from; that’s a hard hill to climb, and I’m not one to kick a Hollywood star just because there’s down. Barring stories of physical or emotional abuse, I root for every Hollywood star to remain a Hollywood star for a period of their choosing. I’ll be rooting for Lohan just as hard if and when she starts angling for a movie career again.

But if there’s one thing I know about Disney as a studio, it’s that they don’t bet on anything when the odds aren’t incredibly in their favor. There’s a reason they funnel so much money into established properties such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, and the live-action remakes of their animated classics. Disney knows their audience, knows what works, and as such, is more likely to go discover the next Lindsay Lohan for The Little Mermaid than work to reestablish one of their all-time child stars. Hopefully, we’ll have the chance to see Lohan and Disney reunited one of these days; probably just not this project and this role.
