Spring is here, and with it come many things: flowers, showers, and signs. If you're planning on hosting a yard sale, or want to support a local candidate running for office, or even want to promote your business with temporary yard signs, there are a few things you should know.
The City of Bismarck posted a temporary yard sign rule reminder on Facebook. Yes, the city has specific rules for where signs for political races, garage sales, and yard service signs can be placed.
Here are some of those rules.
1. Signs are allowed on private property with the owner’s permission.

Here's what the Code of Ordinances Title 5-02-02 says.

A person may not without first obtaining the consent of the owner or occupant, paste, stick, nail or post handbills, placards or posters, or make, print or mark any word, letter or advertisement of any kind upon any private house, store or other building, or upon any fence, wall, railing, telephone or electric light pole, or other private property.

2. Signs cannot be placed on public property, including street boulevards, medians, or rights‑of‑way.

A person may not paste, stick, nail, or mark any work, character, or letter, or advertisement upon any public building, bridge, fence, railing, or sidewalk, or any other property of another within the city, except in compliance with the requirements of law in posting of legal notices. The posting of any sign, handbill, poster, or placard upon public boulevards is expressly prohibited.

3. Signs must not block sidewalks, create visibility issues for drivers, or be attached to utility poles, street lights, traffic signals, or traffic signs.

4. The source also says that a person may not deposit or place any handbill in or upon any vehicle.

Those are just a few things to keep in mind this spring and summer.
