Mandan School Zone Speed Limit Change Takes Effect Soon
School zone speed limits will increase from 15mph to 20 mph in October 2026, according to a statement from the City of Mandan. The change aims to fix a long-standing inconsistency: some Mandan school zones are posted as 15 mph, while others are already at 20 mph. Once the update is complete, every school zone in the city will share the same 20 mph speed limit.
It may seem strange that raising the speed limit could make the roads safer, but that's exactly what officials say is the goal.
How Will The Increase Make Roads Safer?
“Speed limits matching the physical characteristics of the roadway will result in higher compliance." There will be less speed variation between vehicles. Turning onto or crossing roads in school zones will be safer because the gaps between vehicles will be more predictable," says City Engineer Jarek Wigness.
In other words, a uniform speed limit will make it so that drivers are more likely to actually drive the posted speed limit, rather than some going 15 mph and others creeping closer to 25 mph. This will make driving patterns more predictable and less dangerous for kids crossing the street.
The new speed limit will take effect as soon as the signs are posted. Signs are expected to be posted by Oct. 15.
While this change increases the posted speed limit, city officials say student and pedestrian safety remains the top priority, and drivers should always exercise caution in school zones and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
