Why People Are Walking Out Of Work In North Dakota Today

If you're at work today, and you notice a bunch of people walking out of the office, or that many haven't shown up, there is a reason.

According to WKYC, a national "Free America Walkout" is taking place today (Jan. 20th, 2026). The walkout is being led by the social justice group, "Women's March." Tuesday, January 20th, was chosen for the protest as it marks the one-year anniversary of President Trump's return to the White House for his second term.

Why the Walkout

According to the Free America website, the march is motivated by the following:

One year into Trump’s second regime, we face an escalating fascist threat: ICE raids on our communities, troops occupying our cities, families torn apart, attacks on our trans siblings, mass surveillance, and terror used to keep us silent. It is time for our communities to escalate as well.

The website also went on to say this:

Those in power have escalated attacks on our rights, our bodies, and our livelihoods. We’re escalating in response. Walking out lets us stress-test our readiness for real, collective action—not just symbolic protest.

We're unaware of how many North Dakotans are taking part in this protest today, but several local Facebook groups are encouraging people to walk out at 11:30 am and meet at the North Dakota State Capitol.

This protest was publicized nationwide, so it's likely we will see similar protests in other states.
