The trailer for The New Mutants, Fox’s big-screen version of the classic X-Men spinoff, premiered in October of 2017. Here we sit in 2019 and the film remains unreleased — and now it’s been delayed again.

Disney just announced that, as part of its shuffling of its release schedule to accommodate all the projects it inherited from Fox during its corporate acquisition, it was postponing The New Mutants one more time. Previously scheduled to bow in theaters this August, it will instead arrive in April of 2020. That’s two full years after its original release date in 2018.

Here’s that old trailer, if you want to see it for yourself:

The film, directed by Josh Boone, stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams Charlie Heaton, and Alice Braga, playing various members of the famous mutant team. The delays on New Mutants began long before Disney got involved. Various rumors have swirled around the film, its tone, and its supposedly extensive reshoots — as much as 50 percent of the movie, according to some reports.

But that was a while ago, so the whole project could have been recut a few times in the interim. And now Boone has about eight more months to tweak things yet again. Frankly, after all the delays, and the fact that Disney must want to enact its own plans for the X-Men in the MCU, I would have predicted the film would go straight to Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+. And I suppose it still could. But for now, these no-longer-particularly-New Mutants are scheduled for April 2020.
