According to a new report by NewsNation, revealed that Americans spent approximately $228 billion dollars last year on alcohol. That's a shocking number, isn't it? As you can imagine, some states spend more than others, and I thought it might be interesting to see how much North Dakotans spend on alcohol compared to other states.

I'm sure over the years you've heard, or read, that North Dakotans drink more beer than any other state, but what if we're not just looking at beer?

SmartAsset analyzed the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis to see how much the average adult (over the age of 21) spent on alcoholic beverages in each state.

The analysis revealed that North Dakotans weren't the ones spending the most money on alcohol. Alaskans actually ranked as number one; adults spent $1,200 last year on alcohol.

  • One year change in per-capita spending on alcohol: 0.25%

  • Total expenditure on alcohol in 2023 (millions): $465.3

North Dakota was ranked 29th overall compared to other states.
