North Dakota: How To See If Your License Has Been Tracked By Flock Cameras

Did you know that there is a way you can track whether or not your license plate has been picked up by the Flock camera system?

If you want to find out whether or not your plate has been picked up on one of these cameras, CBS reports that there is a website that allows you to type in your license plate number and see. The site is HaveIBeenFlocked.com and was last updated August 19th. HaveIBeenFlocked receives financial support from ANF (Alternative Newsweekly Foundation), which is a nonprofit that supports "watchdog journalism."

The site says it sources its information from audit logs of searches in the Flock system. Flock customers can include police agencies, local communities, schools, and businesses.

What Do Flock Cameras Capture?

According to FlockSafety.com, Flock cameras capture your license plate number, the make, model, and color of your car, and other visible characteristics like bicycle racks, dents, trailers, and toolboxes. The site says the system does not use facial recognition; it focuses only on vehicles.

What Are The Biggest Concerns With Flock Cameras?

There has been a lot of public outcry and privacy concerns about the new Flock cameras popping up all over North Dakota. People worry their movements are being tracked, oversight is weak, and the system could be abused. These privacy concerns aren't just talk either; there have been multiple Flock-camera protests recently throughout the state. Most recently, in Fargo-Moorhead.

Which Areas in North Dakota Have Flock Cameras?

West Fargo appears to have the most Flock cameras of any North Dakota city. As of right now, LPRMaps (License Plate Reader Maps), there are 82 in that city alone. Fargo is listed to have 19, Horace 13, Grand Forks 10, and Bismarck 7. Across the state, an estimated 150 Flock cameras operate. That said, other sites, such as DeFlock.org, report more Flock cameras in our state than that.
