Native Americans were celebrated across the country Monday. Inspiring stories were being shared and this time; one of our own North Dakotans was able to tell hers. This Mandan Hidatsa Arikara woman (and now beer maker) has succeeded in countless ways and is now using Native American culture and history to give others a taste via the brews crafted at Bow & Arrow Brewing Company.

National Native American Day

Today Show's Dylan Dreyer had a terrific interview and story for a "Monday Motivation" on National Native American Day on Monday, October 10th, 2022. During the 3rd Hour Today's segment, host Dylan Dryer showcased how two indigenous women are trailblazers crafting beer using unique flavors as a "window into their culture."

Meet Shyla Sheppard

Hearing speak this businesswoman, entrepreneur, and Standford University graduate; it is hard to believe that her roots all started here on the western plains of North Dakota. Shyla was raised on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in the small town of Twin Buttes with a population of fewer than 200 people as a member of the MHA Nation. (Mandan Hidatsa Arikara, the Three Affiliated Tribes.)

Roots

For Shyla growing up on the reservation, there was a lot of focus on education, athletics, and having strong role models paving the way for her to become a "driven leader" too. One mentor Shyla watched and often she speaks fondly about is her grandmother, Wanda Fox Sheppard, a dynamo in action.

Wanda Fox Sheppard was an integral part of the New Town Powwow, an event held annually that holds a special place in Shyla's heart.

Located in the beautiful landscape of New Mexico is where one can find the Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. with craft beers such as "Denim Tux", that was enjoyed "on-air" during the Today Show feature, or "Strawberry Amigo".

Distribution is growing fast! Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. was founded by the ladies in 2014, and already can be purchased in many places across the United States!

Sadly, for us North Dakotans... The closest place to purchase is Colorado.

(That is unless you know the owner...

Hint, Hint Shy... Sneak a six-pack back for ole BEC.)

Over the years, Bow and Arrow Brewing Company, has gained national attention such as being invited to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, where Shyla Sheppard was asked to speak and explain how her company brings the Native American Culture through brewing together.
