Despite the many postponements over the years, we are getting closer and closer to the Real ID deadline.

Of course, there's always a chance that it will get postponed again, but let's assume it won't.

The Real ID deadline is May 7th, 2025. If you haven't gotten yours, you better make an appointment to get one through NDDOT.

A Real ID will soon be required for all U.S. citizens wishing to board domestic flights and gain access to certain federal facilities.

What Do I Need to Get a Real ID?

If My License Isn't Expired, Do I Need A Real ID?

I've heard many people ask this question, and the answer depends on you. Do you plan on boarding flights? Do you need access to federal/government facilities? If not, then technically, you don't.

According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation Driver's License Division, technically, you can keep your current driver's license. It will still be recognized in most other instances, like if you were to get pulled over.

That said, you should probably switch over. It will make your life easier and give you the freedom to go and do whatever you want or need to. A Real ID costs $15 and is valid for four years.
