While it's true that nature is full of beautiful and majestic creatures, most of us can agree that skunks are slightly less than majestic.

Even though skunks look cute, there are very few animals we run from faster. One spray, and you'll stink for days, if not a week.

Look Out North Dakota!

I hate to break it to you, but skunks are something you're going to have to look out for a little more over the next month or so.

Did you know three different types of skunks are found in North Dakota?

  • Striped Skunk
  • Western Spotted Skunk
  • Eastern Spotted Skunk

According to Skedaddle Wildlife, skunk mating season is in February and March. With a gestation period of eight to ten weeks, litters are born in May or early June.

Fun Fact: According to CalgaryWildlife.org,  baby skunks are called "kits,' male skunks are called "bucks," and female skunks are called "does."

What does that mean? Well, that means by fall, parent skunks start kicking the babies out of their dens, creating a lot of movement in the skunk population.

What Does This Mean?

Because skunks are more active and move around trying to find homes, you are more likely to encounter one. Keep your eyes open and your nose sniffing!

Something To Keep In Mind

I know we don't have a massive skunk population in North Dakota, but the odds of you seeing one now are higher than any other time of year. Keep in mind that they won't spray you without a warning.

According to DiscoverWildcare.org, if you see a skunk with its tail raised and shaking, THAT is a sign it is about to spray. Look at the tail, and you will know when it's about to happen.

The source says a skunk will also stamp its feet, turn its tail, and head toward you before the spray.

Either way, you should get away from the animal as quickly as you can without spooking it.
