Have you ever wondered what the most iconic foods are in the state of North Dakota? I asked around, did a little research and put together a list of five of North Dakota‘s most iconic foods.

#1. Tater Tot Hotdish
North Dakota and other upper Midwestern states tend to call casserole a "hot dish," an some may find that surprising.
There’s one hot dish that stands out above all the others and this is the tater tot hot dish.
I’m sad to say I’ve never had it, but I hear great things.
#2. Cheese Buttons
A cheese button is a cottage cheese filled dumpling. They are similar to ravioli, and have German roots.
#3. Walleye
North Dakota love to eat fish, but not just any fish. The walleye is very much a statewide favorite. I never tried it until I moved out here. I'm embarrassed to admit, I had never even heard of a walleye until I moved to the state.
#4. Caramel Rolls
North Dakotans love their caramel-topped pastries. As a matter of fact, there’s much debate over where to get the best caramel rolls. What do you think? Who has the most delicious caramel rolls in North Dakota?
#5. Lefse
Lefse is a traditional soft Norwegian flatbread. It’s made with rice, potatoes and people in North Dakota love it.
