Go for a swim Aquaman; take a smoke break Joker; see ya later Shazam. There’s a new star in the DC universe, and she’s queer and she’s here to blow every other superhero and villain away.

Ruby Rose will bring Batwoman, aka Kate Kane, to the small screen in her very own solo series. But before that, we’ll meet her caped hero in The CW’s mega-crossover event this December. Ahead of the crossover, the network debuted the very first look at Rose in the Batwoman suit and iconic red hair. It’s designed by none other than Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, according to Indiewire, and it looks pretty awesome:

What’s most exciting about Rose’s Batwoman is that she’ll be portrayed as an out lesbian, true to the comics. Rose, best known for Orange Is the New Black, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and John Wick: Chapter 2, is openly queer and identifies as gender-fluid (she uses she/her/hers pronouns). A queer Batwoman getting her own series, played by a queer performer; that’s exactly what more networks need to be doing.

That’s just one way The CW has been breaking ground for LGBTQ representation in the superhero genre; there’s also Black Lightning‘s openly queer Thunder, aka Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams), and soon Nicole Maines will play a trans superhero on Supergirl.

Rose’s Batwoman will team up with Supergirl, The Flash and Green Arrow for the “Elseworlds” crossover event, kicking off on December 9.
