The Supreme Court of the United States struck down the Defense of Marriage Act today, calling it unconstitutional to deprive couples of the same sex equal rights and liberty to access benefits, tax breaks and insurance. In 1996 the Defense of Marriage Act law denied couples of the same sex access to benefits/insurance/couples coverage. With today's decision, same sex couples in the 12 states and District of Columbia where gay marriage is legal will be able to fully have rights and tax relief for their marriage unions. It's a great move by the Supreme Court in supporting equal rights for all U.S. citizens.
