Sunday evening I was at home. I had spent the weekend with family, some from Wisconsin, making memories, laughing, playing with the little ones, and having fun. I was also consuming way more candy than I should have. My assortment of Halloween candy had Reese, Hershey bars, and Milk Duds...I ate plenty. I was looking up events in Bismarck Mandan, there it was Turkey Trot. I hit register.

What was I thinking? I have not run a road race in 7 or 8 years. I was jogging last summer before I was diagnosed with cancer again. I registered for the 5k RUN!!! My body was screaming "What the hell are you doing?". Personally, I blame the candy. I was high on sugar and that's what did it.

The Turkey Trot road race is run on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 25th. There is a 5k run, 10k run, 5k walk, 5k Family Fun walk-that is not timed and a virtual 5k.

This is the 32nd year for the run, a brisk run along the Missouri River. Hundreds of people gather to take part in this fun event. Proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Association of North Dakota. Many families make it their annual tradition.

The first time I did the Turkey Trot, I told people as we passed, I was doing this for extra whipped cream on the pumpkin pie, burning calories ahead of time. We shared laughter and kept going. This year is going to be different. I have not run in over a year. Even as I write this, I still have not stepped onto a treadmill. I checked to make sure it was not an infusion week, but I am sure to be tired, I am always tired, but I am going to do it. I signed up for the run, you can walk during a run, but you can't run during a walk. As long as I finish I will be happy.

There is still time for you to get registered. Go to: CFA Turkey Trot - 11/25/2021 - Race Information (raceentry.com). Besides raising money for a really good cause, you will have some fun too. You might run into people you know too, like Mayor Steve Bakken, he has run it in the past, some KXMB TV anchors have run it. Family members who have moved away, but come home for Thanksgiving run it.

So...are you going to join me in the Turkey Trot this year? Think about it...football games don't start till noon, you put the turkey in the oven at 6 am....what are you going to do in the meantime? Burn some calories, earn that whipped cream...I will see you at the Turkey Trot road race!

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
