It's hard to believe that summer in North Dakota is winding down, but here we are. We are seeing signs of it everywhere: signs of fall, pool closing announcements, and back-to-school everything hitting the shelves in our local grocery stores.

Speaking of back-to-school, we've put together a list of things you should know before your kids start hitting the books again.

Here are some Do's and Don'ts according to ChildMind.org.

DO start getting back into the routine. Consider changing up bedtimes a week before school actually starts, so it's not such a tough adjustment that first week of school.

DON'T leave shopping until the last minute. Everything will be picked over, and you will have a hard time getting all the things on the school supplies list.

DON'T forget to celebrate. You want your child to be excited about going back to class, so even if you have anxiety about it, try to keep that from showing.

DO commemorate the moment. Take pictures of your little ones on the first day; you're going to want to look back at that moment and possibly pull out those funny photos so you can show them to your kid's first girlfriend.

DO a trial run. There's nothing quite like the anxiety you feel when trying to find your class and locker on the first day. If you stop by the school during open house hours, you can figure out where everything is and avoid any awkward first-day moments.
