History of the Dakota Marker Game Between North Dakota State and South Dakota State

This Saturday, October 15th, the North Dakota State Bison and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits will meet in the 13th annual Dakota Marker game. So, what exactly is the Dakota Marker?

According to Wikipedia, the Dakota Marker trophy was introduced at a ceremony just outside of Hankinson, North Dakota in 2004.

The trophy includes the inscriptions N.D., S.D., and 190 M, which is the distance between Fargo, North Dakota and Brookings, South Dakota along I-29.

Though the Dakota Marker has only been around since 2004, the rivalry between North Dakota State and South Dakota State dates all the way back to 1903, when the Bison defeated the Jackrabbits 85-0.

Since 1903, the Bison and Jackrabbits have met 104 times, with NDSU leading the series 59-40. There have also been five ties, according to Wikipedia.

NDSU has won six straight Dakota Marker games, dating back to 2010. Overall, the Bison have won eight Dakota Marker games.
