Today (March 8) marks 2016's International Women's Day, a day meant to not only honor the achievements of women around the world, but to also raise further awareness of gender inequality that continues to exist on a global level.

Internationalwomensday.com says, “Celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Yet let’s also be aware progress has slowed in many places across the world, so urgent action is needed to accelerate gender parity."

According to the United Nations’ official website, International Women’s Day has been celebrated since 1909, when the Socialist Party of America first chose to observe it on February 28. It was meant as an homage to the garment workers who went on strike in New York in 1908 to protest working conditions. By 1914, it had shifted to its official March 8 date, which is recognized around the world annually as International Women’s Day.

This year, quite a few celebrities have chosen to use their enormous public platforms to highlight the importance of gender equality. Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Priyanka Chopra, Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis are among the many famous names who posted across various social media platforms in an attempt to draw attention to the day.
