The North Dakota Department of Transportation is rolling out upgrades to its ND Roads travel map, aimed at improving usability and expanding real-time snowplow tracking for motorists across the state.

The updates follow the installation of new in-truck technology that allows more snowplows to share both location and photo data directly to the online map. Officials say the improvement significantly increases visibility for travelers checking road conditions during winter weather.

“Previously, only about one-third of the state’s 352 snowplows could share location data,” said Barry Kinnischtzke, an operations section team leader with NDDOT. “Now, most plows are visible on the map, and we expect full coverage by the end of the winter season.”

In addition to expanded tracking, the map itself has been refined with a clearer legend and improved highway labeling to make navigation easier for users. Commercial drivers will also notice a new feature linking directly to LoadPass Permits, a system that allows companies to apply for overweight and over-dimension travel permits on local roads in one centralized place.

Transportation officials say the enhancements build on an already popular tool that helps drivers make informed decisions, especially during North Dakota’s harsh winter conditions.
