Have we ever lived in more difficult times financially? Explosive gas prices, grocery prices that break the bank, skyrocket utility bills, the price of new automobiles- just about everything costs more these days.

That's why some Americans turn to shoplifting. One retail store that is known for having a little of everything is a favorite among thieves. I'm talking about Target, but crooks beware: Target is known for its strict shoplifting policies, and they often watch until they have an iron-clad case against you before they catch you red-handed in the act.

When Stealing Becomes a Felony

In North Dakota, if you steal property or services valued at more than $1,000, it becomes a felony. I recently spoke with a former long-time North Dakota Target employee, and she told me the store often watches criminals and builds a case against you, especially for repeat offenders.

First off, there are "secret shoppers" who are really Target employees, dressed like everyday folks, who look for shoplifters, and of course there are cameras everywhere. Rather than busting you for a simple misdemeanor, they wait until you get over $1,000 dollars in theft before they call the cops on you. Keep in mind, certain types of theft automatically qualify as felonies regardless of cost, like firearms and ammunition, and prescription drugs.

Don't get a false sense of security about shoplifting smaller valuable items. Target will prosecute you even if you are under the $1000 threshold. It just depends on the situation.

Believe it or not, the latest data shows that 1 in 5 people have shoplifted before, which is much higher than I would've ever thought. I guess I was raised that stealing is a lazy man's way, and not to mention every time I drive over the Expressway overpass and see the North Dakota State Penitentiary, it's a good reminder to never steal.
