The buzz at the North Dakota State Hockey tournament in Grand Forks this weekend was not what Bismarck Century does on the ice, but after the game is over.

Scrolling through my Facebook feed on Saturday I came across countless pictures and comments on the Bismarck Century boy's hockey team.  Most of them are from my Grand Forks friends (I was born and raised in Forks) who have never seen a high school team do something like that.

What am I talking about?  The Bismarck Century players pray after each game.

According to standout junior defensemen and Captain Max Vig, the idea came from our very own Bismarck Bobcats NAHL team.  Max said, "They want to thank God for the opportunity to play the game they all love."

They always invite the opposing team to join them and think of it as a good way to include them win or lose.  Max said, "He believes it shows good sportsmanship."  Max also added, "We take turns praying and it's never the same kid twice."

I can't even tell you how impressed people in Grand Forks were with this gesture.

Some comments I read were "college and pro players could learn from these fine young men."  Another read, "impressive during and after the game."

As somebody who has had the privilege of covering this team on the radio all season long, I too was very impressed with this show of sportsmanship and faith the first time I witnessed it.

Bismarck Century was probably the most improved boy's hockey team not only in the west but in the entire state this season.

They gave the eventual state champion Fargo South all they could handle in the quarterfinals at state losing 3-2.  Then in typical Century fashion, they gutted it out on the consolation side upsetting Bismarck Legacy in another one-goal game before beating Jamestown in the consolation championship by a score of 2-1.

The Vig brother Max and Charlie are two of the most exciting players to watch in North Dakota high school hockey right now.  The future sure looks bright for Century hockey and they might even have a higher power on their side.
